Using SSL (https://) for Checkout

UPDATE: This documentation can be skipped and replaced by our One Click SSL extension plugin for the Shopping Cart plugin as it will take care of the SSL (https://) functionality for you.

Disregarding the payment method you’re using, you may want to use a secure protocol (https://) for your checkout procedure on your website using the WordPress Shopping Cart plugin. There is an easy way to do this in 3 steps:

Note: There are TWO additional plugins required to secure the checkout process.

1. Get an SSL certificate

First you’ll need an SSL certificate. You can contact your hosting provider directly to enquire about SSL and what options they have. Some hosts don’t sell SSL directly then you’ll have to look at a 3rd party provider such as Comodo Instant SSL.

2. Install WordPress with SSL plugin

The WordPress with SSL plugin allows you to put a “force_ssl” custom field on posts/pages to force them to redirect to https:// on your site.

Install and activate this plugin and edit the Shopping Cart page used by the plugin and add the custom field “force_ssl” with the value “true”.

3. Install HTTPS for WordPress plugin

The HTTPS for WordPress plugin tries to force all references to images, stylesheets, scripts, etc. to https:// when the user is on an https:// page.

Install and activate this plugin on your site. There is nothing that you need to configure and this plugin will do its job by itself.

Please note: Not all plugins and themes abide by WordPress conventions so if some references fail, you need to look into those specific plugins or the theme. As the HTTPS for WordPress plugin clearly states:

“For this to happen you must have used correct programming practices and use siteurl, wpurl, url etc where all the locations are supposed to be.”
